boarding school - Windsor, CA

Makana is a youth leadership academy, designed to help each individual become a powerful leader. We do this by teaching our students how to overcome any resistance to change, obtain the skills needed for success, and establish healthy habits. We begin with the end result in mind, which is a competent, skilled, and powerful leader – ready to surmount any of life's challenges. Our program is a "continuum of care," because it is not a short-term interruption, but an ongoing transformation into independent success.

Currently, Makana does not yet have a boarding school located in Windsor, CA.
Therefore, enrollment into our boarding school will require a temporary relocation to Utah.

Boarding Schools Windsor, CA

Makana Leadership Academy is an accredited high school, with a campus that operates much like the typical boarding schools in Windsor, CA, in that thay are both structured and nurturing to the resident students. At Makana, our boarding school provides a quality education for students who live on our school campus (as opposed to a day school). Our goal is to inspire learning within each student. We offer academic recovery programs, designed to help adolescent boys and girls get back on track in school, make up credits they've missed, and get themselves back on the road to graduation. Our curriculum is based on progressive techniques, a holistic approach, and emerging science that ultimately leads to great personal development.

Our classrooms are moderate in size, with up to 10 students per classroom. Core subjects are taught by our trained and knowledgeable staff, and a large list of courses are offered online with teacher support. Here at Makana, we help each student to focus on topics that inspire them and assist them with discovering the learning style that comes most naturally to them. We know that once a student recognizes what they are capable of, he or she will go from a "hopeless" feeling about their high-school graduation, to setting ambitious goals for their education.

Co-Ed Boarding School

Here at Makana, we offer a co-ed boarding school, also known as mixed-sex or mixed-gender education. This is a system of education where males and females are educated together. We believe that, coupled with stability and support, this is the ideal environment for students to live and learn together. When troubled teenagers have their therapeutic sessions backed up by a positive, mixed-gender peer group and support structure, they're typically able to progress at a much faster pace, versus in a less structured environment.

Makana's teachers are licensed by the state, and have all worked in other alternative learning environments prior to coming to Makana. Our academic staff is adept at addressing issues such as poor study habits, anxious reactions, resistance to follow-through, and rebellion toward authority. Our academic team of staff is prepared with both an effective credit recovery strategy, and the ability to inspire new areas of interest for each student. With these tools, our boarding school program helps its students gain enthusiasm for their educational goals – even beyond high school graduation.

Boarding Schools for At-risk Teens

boarding schools Windsor, CA - at-risk teens

At our boarding school for at-risk teens, progress is one of the key areas we measure, especially the academic progress of our students. One key component to measuring a student's progress begins with completing a comprehensive credit analysis, completed by our Academic Director, within the first few days of a student's arrival. This analysis is then discussed with each student, and a Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) is created specifically for him or her. At this point, the needed classes are assigned to meet each student's individual needs.

After our students have begun their classes, they themselves monitor their own progress on a daily basis, along with the assistance of their classroom teachers. Progress checks are completed twice a week, on each Monday and Friday. Then student meetings are held every week with the Academic Director, to discuss the progress of each student, and to make needed changes to ensure each student is continuing in their progress.

Boarding School for Wayward Youth

Many of our students who attend our boarding school have been unsuccessful in mainstream educational settings, even if they are very bright. We have come to understand that these adolescent boys and girls need strategies to help them succeed; strategies that our trained staff can provide. Also, for struggling adolescents whose home lives may not be conducive to healing, or for whom round the clock monitoring and support is required, a boarding school for wayward youth, like Makana's, can be most beneficial.

"This is one of the best classes I have ever taken! In fact, it is one of the best overall things, in general, that I have ever done for myself and in my life!"

– D.A. (Student)

One of the primary advantages of a boarding school for at-risk teens, is the separation from their current social group of friends and influences that often keep them down. These "issues" can range from cognitive learning challenges to frequent self-harm or gaming addictions, which can't be properly addressed in a traditional school environment. Here at Makana, we take the time to understand each student, and provide them with academics at their personal level and pace, while teaching them to obtain the skills needed for success and establish healthy habits.

At Makana, we believe that knowledge is the key to helping adolescent boys and girls reach their aspirations – regardless of disability, circumstance, or background. For teenagers with learning disabilities like processing deficits, dyslexia, or ADD, they can receive a level of attention at Makana that simply is not available in traditional schools.

We have seen that once our students are able to face some of their more challenging internal conflicts, they inevitably find themselves able to address and overcome life's problems. Offering troubled teens a chance to really tackle some of their deeper issues can open them up to an entirely new way of living their lives.

An ongoing transition to independent success

Makana Leadership Academy enlists knowledgeable specialists who are passionate about our mission, which is to render "superior care" to our youth, to address the deficiencies of the current options available to families. We do this through continuous, daily engagement into mental, physical, emotional, and social challenges, addressing the health of our students "holistically," with our 4 Dimensions of Wellbeing.

Makana Leadership Academy is a non-profit organization. We do not answer to shareholders or investors, who seek increased profitability. We measure success instead, by the positive "outcomes" and results our students and their families get. Our financial proceeds are being put to work for the benefit of the students and families who take part in our program. Some of the ways we do this is through escalating learning opportunities, growing our capacity to serve more families, advancements in technology, and improved school supplies.
