boarding school - Walnut Creek, CA

Makana is Hawaiian, and it means "gift." The gift we offer to our students and families is hope. We are here to help the teen who has established the identity of "hopeless" or "unruly," as well as the parent, feeling discouragement and fear for the future. Our program is for families of teenage boys and girls, ages 14-17, who are struggling with inadequate academics, problematic relationships, persistent substance use, or malicious behaviors as a result of failing mental health.

Currently, Makana does not yet have a boarding school located in Walnut Creek, CA.
Therefore, enrollment into our boarding school will require a temporary relocation to Utah.

Boarding Schools Walnut Creek, CA

Makana Leadership Academy is an accredited high school, with a campus that operates much like the typical boarding schools in Walnut Creek, CA, in that thay are both structured and nurturing to the resident students. We offer academic recovery programs, designed to help teen boys and girls get back on track in school, make up credits they've missed, and get themselves back on the road to graduation. At Makana, our boarding school provides a quality education for students who live on our school campus (as opposed to a day school). Our goal is to inspire learning within each student. Our curriculum is based on progressive techniques, emerging science, and a holistic approach that ultimately leads to great personal development.

Our classrooms are moderate in size, with up to 10 students per classroom. Core subjects are taught by our qualified and competent staff, and a large list of courses are offered online with teacher support. Here at Makana, we help each student to focus on topics that inspire them and assist them with discovering the learning style that comes most naturally to them. We know that once a student recognizes what they are capable of, he or she will go from a "hopeless" feeling about their high-school graduation, to setting ambitious goals for their education.

Co-Ed Boarding School

Here at Makana, we offer a co-ed boarding school, also known as mixed-sex or mixed-gender education. This is a system of education where males and females are educated together. We believe that, coupled with stability and support, this is the ideal environment for students to live and learn together. When troubled teenagers have their therapeutic sessions backed up by a positive, mixed-gender peer group and support structure, they're typically able to progress at a much faster pace, versus in a less structured environment.

Makana's teachers are licensed by the state, and have all worked in other alternative learning environments prior to coming to Makana. Our academic staff is adept at addressing issues such as poor study habits, anxious reactions, resistance to follow-through, and rebellion toward authority. Our academic team of staff is prepared with both an effective credit recovery strategy, and the ability to inspire new areas of interest for each student. With these tools, our boarding school program helps its students gain enthusiasm for their educational goals – even beyond high school graduation.

Boarding Schools for Troubled Teenagers

boarding schools Walnut Creek, CA - troubled teenagers

At our boarding school for troubled teenagers, progress is one of the key areas we measure, especially the academic progress of our students. One key component to measuring a student's progress begins with completing a comprehensive credit analysis, completed by our Academic Director, within the first few days of a student's arrival. This analysis is then discussed with each student, and a Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) is created specifically for him or her. At this point, the needed classes are assigned to meet each student's individual needs.

After our students have begun their classes, they themselves monitor their own progress on a daily basis, along with the assistance of their classroom teachers. Progress checks are completed twice a week, on each Monday and Friday. Then student meetings are held every week with the Academic Director, to discuss the progress of each student, and to make needed changes to ensure each student is continuing in their progress.

Boarding School for Struggling Youth

Many of our students who attend our boarding school have been unsuccessful in mainstream educational settings, even if they are very bright. We have come to understand that these teen boys and girls need strategies to help them succeed; strategies that our qualified staff can provide. Also, for at-risk teens whose home lives may not be conducive to healing, or for whom round the clock monitoring and support is required, a boarding school for struggling youth, like Makana's, can be most beneficial.

"I have gained tons of insight and greater awareness. I had no idea how beneficial and helpful this would actually be. The most helpful thing is looking at everyday relationships, how those are functioning, my role in them, and how I can help improve them."

– A.H. (Student)

One of the primary advantages of a boarding school for troubled teenagers, is the separation from their current social group of friends and influences that often keep them down. These "issues" can range from cognitive learning challenges to problematic relationships or persistent substance use, which can't be properly addressed in a traditional school environment. Here at Makana, we take the time to understand each student, and provide them with academics at their personal level and pace, while teaching them to conquer any resistance to change and acquire the skills needed for success.

At Makana, we believe that knowledge is the key to helping teen boys and girls reach their aspirations – regardless of disability, circumstance, or background. For teenagers with learning disabilities like ADD, cognitive challenges, or dyscalculia, they can receive a level of attention at Makana that simply is not available in traditional schools.

We have seen that once our students are able to face some of their more challenging internal conflicts, they inevitably find themselves able to address and overcome life's problems. Offering troubled teens a chance to really tackle some of their deeper issues can open them up to an entirely new way of living their lives.

The internal engine of self-drive is ignited

Makana Leadership Academy is a non-profit organization. Because of this, we are not obligated to investors or shareholders seeking greater profitability. We measure success instead, by the positive "outcomes" of the families we serve, who are the lifeline of our program's success. We are committed to putting our financial proceeds to work for the sole benefit of our students and their families. Some of the ways we do this is through enhancements to our facility, expanding our capacity to help more families, augmented learning opportunities, and deepening our needed staff.

Makana is Hawaiian, and it means "gift." The gift we offer to our students and families is hope. Makana is a youth leadership academy, designed to help each individual become a powerful leader. We do this by teaching our students how to acquire the skills needed for success, develop healthy habits, and conquer any resistance to change. We answer to no bottom-line profits, nor investors, and our goal is simple; "positive outcomes that are lasting." We achieve these outcomes by our commitment to the Makana mission, which is to give "more suitable care" to our students.
