boarding school - Roosevelt, UT
Our program employs skilled professionals, committed to the Makana mission, which is to provide "better care" for our youth, to address the shortcomings of the current options available to teens. We do this through progressive, daily immersion into mental, physical, emotional, and social challenges; thus addressing the health of our students "holistically," with our 4 Dimensions of Wellbeing.
Boarding Schools Roosevelt, UT
Makana Leadership Academy is an accredited high school, with a campus that operates much like the typical boarding schools in Roosevelt, UT, in that thay are both structured and nurturing to the resident students. Our goal is to inspire learning within each student. At Makana, our boarding school provides a quality education for pupils who live on our school campus (as opposed to a day school). We offer academic recovery programs, designed to help teens get back on track in school, make up credits they've missed, and get themselves back on track for their graduation. Our curriculum is based on emerging science, progressive techniques, and a holistic approach that ultimately leads to great personal development.
Our classrooms are moderate in size, with up to 10 students per classroom. Core subjects are taught by our skilled and trained staff, and a large list of courses are offered online with teacher support. Here at Makana, we help each student to focus on topics that inspire them and assist them with discovering the learning style that comes most naturally to them. We know that once a student recognizes what they are capable of, he or she will go from a "hopeless" feeling about their high-school graduation, to setting ambitious goals for their education.
Co-Ed Boarding School
Here at Makana, we offer a co-ed boarding school, also known as mixed-sex or mixed-gender education. This is a system of education where males and females are educated together. We believe that, coupled with stability and support, this is the ideal environment for students to live and learn together. When troubled teenagers have their therapeutic sessions backed up by a positive, mixed-gender peer group and support structure, they're typically able to progress at a much faster pace, versus in a less structured environment.
Makana's teachers are licensed by the state, and have all worked in other alternative learning environments prior to coming to Makana. Our academic staff is adept at addressing issues such as poor study habits, anxious reactions, resistance to follow-through, and rebellion toward authority. Our academic team of staff is prepared with both an effective credit recovery strategy, and the ability to inspire new areas of interest for each student. With these tools, our boarding school program helps its students gain enthusiasm for their educational goals – even beyond high school graduation.
Boarding Schools for Troubled Teenagers
At our boarding school for troubled teenagers, progress is one of the key areas we measure, especially the academic progress of our students. One key component to measuring a student's progress begins with completing a comprehensive credit analysis, completed by our Academic Director, within the first few days of a student's arrival. This analysis is then discussed with each student, and a Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) is created specifically for him or her. At this point, the needed classes are assigned to meet each student's individual needs.
After our students have begun their classes, they themselves monitor their own progress on a daily basis, along with the assistance of their classroom teachers. Progress checks are completed twice a week, on each Monday and Friday. Then student meetings are held every week with the Academic Director, to discuss the progress of each student, and to make needed changes to ensure each student is continuing in their progress.
Boarding School for Struggling Youth
Many of our students who attend our boarding school have been unsuccessful in mainstream educational settings, even if they are very bright. We have come to understand that these teens need strategies to help them succeed; strategies that our skilled staff can provide. Also, for at-risk teens whose home lives may not be conducive to healing, or for whom round the clock monitoring and support is required, a boarding school for struggling youth, like Makana's, can be most beneficial.
"I never had any goals to speak of as far as school goes. But I can see a way to finish high school with good grades and I’m considering my options school after I graduate."
– J.S. (Student)
One of the primary advantages of a boarding school for troubled teenagers, is the separation from their current social group of friends and influences that often keep them down. These "issues" can range from cognitive learning challenges to failing academics or periodic self-harm, which can't be properly addressed in a traditional school environment. Here at Makana, we take the time to understand each student, and provide them with academics at their personal level and pace, while teaching them to overcome resistance to change and learn the skills needed for success.
At Makana, we believe that knowledge is the key to helping teens reach their aspirations – regardless of disability, circumstance, or background. For teenagers with learning disabilities like ADHD, processing deficits, or dyslexia, they can receive a level of attention at Makana that simply is not available in traditional schools.
We have seen that once our students are able to face some of their more challenging internal conflicts, they inevitably find themselves able to address and overcome life's problems. Offering troubled teens a chance to really tackle some of their deeper issues can open them up to an entirely new way of living their lives.
Achieving leadership with lasting change
Here, at Makana Leadership Academy, our goal is positive "outcomes" that are lasting. We answer to no investor nor profit bottom-line. Instead, we are driven by our triple-bottom-line objective. Our mission, which is to provide "better care" for our youth, is the personal commitment of each person on our staff. Our promise and our gift to our at-risk youth and their families, is lifelong change and a future full of hope.
We are a youth leadership academy, designed to help each individual become a powerful leader. We do this by teaching our students how to overcome resistance to change, learn the skills needed for success, and build healthy habits. We begin with the end result in mind, which is a powerful, competent, and skilled leader – ready to take on any life challenge. Our school is not a short-term interruption, but an ongoing transition into independent success, that we term as a "continuum of care."
