Therapeutic Boarding Schools

At Makana Leadership Academy, our therapeutic boarding school is a residential school offering not only a quality education, but also therapy for students with emotional or behavioral issues. You could say that Makana has a therapeutic approach to our academics. Our goal is to inspire learning within each student. We holistically support our students' individualized academic, emotional, and social needs to create a setting that serves the learning and therapeutic care of each individual.

Therapeutic boarding schools, like here at Makana, aim to promote growth and learning for their students, in a long-term model, while offerring psychological counseling and treatment of various mental health challenges. Our staff of academic teachers are generally well versed in these matters, and actively work to help our students develop better psychological and academic strategies, so that the pupils can achieve results in line with their potential.

Our team of clinical staff specialize in therapies which have been most successful with struggling youth. Examples of these are:

  • Attachment-based
  • Cognitive behavioral (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavioral (DBT)
  • Experiential therapy
  • Family systems therapy
  • Internal family systems (IFS)
  • Mindfulness-based (MBCT)
  • Multidimensional family (MDFT)
  • Rational emotive behavior (REBT)
  • Relational therapy
  • Structural family therapy
  • Trauma focused therapy

Progress
therapeutic boarding school student having individual needs met

At our therapeutic school, progress is one of the key areas we measure, especially the academic progress of our students. One key component to measuring a student's progress begins with completing a comprehensive credit analysis, completed by our Academic Director, within the first few days of a student's arrival. This analysis is then discussed with each pupil, and a Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) is created specifically for him or her. At this point, the needed classes are assigned to meet each student's individual needs.

Credit recovery is a key area of academics at Makana Leadership Academy. Here, through the use of our online platform, our students are able to recover credits at a much faster pace when compared to other more traditional methods. Students at our therapeutic school have all the classes at their fingertips for quick credit recovery, which are hand selected for students based on their individual needs.

Therapeutic Boarding School Behavioral Approach

The behavioral approach in the academic settings is based on the relational model, which is a theme throughout all other aspects and programs of Makana. Our staff are trained to ensure that students feel safe and supported emotionally, so they may better focus on their academic goals and ambitions. Behaviors are addressed on a one-on-one basis, and the purpose of all interactions are designed to address the root of what may be causing the relevant behavioral concerns. Interventions, modifications, and accommodations are then put into place to help the student grow and move forward.

"This is one of the best classes I have ever taken! In fact, it is one of the best overall things, in general, that I have ever done for myself and in my life! I am learning so very much. I love our group and our teacher!"

Parent Communication

Parent communication is a vital piece in the academics of our students here at Makana. Parents are able to access educational information 24/7, via our parent portal. In addition, parents are given weekly updates on how their child is progressing in our Therapeutic boarding school, both academically and behaviorally. These updates provide vital information for the week, while keeping the parents well informed as a member of their child's team. Parents can also schedule additional progress calls with the Academic Director at any time during their child's stay at Makana.
